SwaTaleem works in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya or KGBVs. These are residential schools specifically designed to provide education to minority girls in India. They are throughout the country in what is known as Educational Backward Blocks catering to 6th-8th standards (sometimes 9th -12th). Over time, KGBVs have battled multifold challenges in fulfilling the vision they were set up for. They are characterized by poorly paid teachers, lack of educational resources, lack of educational training programs. Coupled with these issues, usually the girl students drop out after 8th and are married off. Addressing this issue, SwaTaleem is building a thriving environment for student leaders, teachers, wardens and administration by creating a network of KGBVs and developing socio-emotional skills and cognitive skills.
